Common questions
Do small garden birds work, or only big ones?
Both, as long as the bird fills a reasonable part of the frame and is in focus. A robin photographed close up on a feeder produces far better line art than a distant crop of a bird on a rooftop.
Will the individual feathers show up?
On a sharp photo, yes. Wing and tail feathers come out as separate outlined shapes, which is what makes bird pages so satisfying to colour. Very soft or distant photos give a simpler outline instead.
Does a bird in flight work?
It works if the shot is sharp. A spread wing gives one of the best pages you can get from this, but any motion blur in the wingtips will show as a soft edge.
Can I use a photo through a cage?
It is better to photograph with the cage door open or through the gap. Bars in front of the bird get traced as lines and cut across the drawing.
